Built-ins fail the same mechanical ways carts do, at a different price. The island, gas stub, and 120 V stay. The question is whether the head is still a head. Follow the flowchart above, then this list.
Five-minute audit
Do this cold, gas off at the stub, GFCI off if you will open the cabinet.
Photograph the chassis plate before you price anything.
Daylight / poke test the firebox floor and lid. Same rule as rusted firebox.
Count part classes you would order this season (igniter/transformer, burner, IR, lights, rotisserie) — not SKU count.
Check cutout width against a current spec sheet. ALX2 42 is not a drop-in ALXE-42 without measuring.
One U-burner or one IR sear that matches the plate (Trident, SearZone, RapidSear, ProSear — those names are not interchangeable).
Rotisserie motor, hood springs, halogen lamps, briquette tray.
Drip pan and grease path. A packed island cabinet is a fire, but the pan itself is cheap.
Replace the head (or walk away)
Firebox floor or lid rusted through (daylight, screwdriver through scale). Same rule as rusted firebox, except you are quoting a built-in head plus possible jacket, not a $400 cart.
Three or more classes this season (burners + IR + transformer + lights) on a 15-year box.
Manifold or control panel fire-damaged.
Cutout no longer matches current product (ALX2 42 is not a drop-in ALXE-42 without checking the spec sheet). A new head that does not fit the island is a remodel.
