Repair vs replace a Lynx or Alfresco built-in

A $200 transformer is a repair. A rusted firebox in a $8,000 island is a head replacement. Worksheet for Lynx, Alfresco, Wolf, Viking, DCS, and similar built-ins — no fake prices.

Repair versus replace flowchart If the firebox is rusted through, replace. If you need three or more part classes this season, replace. If the manifold or cabinet is fire-damaged, replace. Otherwise repair that one part. START · THREE QUESTIONS 1. Floor or lid rusted THROUGH? Daylight? Screwdriver through scale? If yes, the box is done. Stop buying parts. Built-ins fail the same mechanical ways carts do, at a different price. The island, gas stub, and 120 V stay. The question is whether the head is still a head. Follow the flowchart above, then this list.

Five-minute audit

Do this cold, gas off at the stub, GFCI off if you will open the cabinet.

  1. Photograph the chassis plate before you price anything.
  2. Daylight / poke test the firebox floor and lid. Same rule as rusted firebox.
  3. Count part classes you would order this season (igniter/transformer, burner, IR, lights, rotisserie) — not SKU count.
  4. Check cutout width against a current spec sheet. ALX2 42 is not a drop-in ALXE-42 without measuring.
  5. NG hard pipe: do not treat this as an LP regulator reset. See outdoor kitchen leak-check.
