The Spirit E-310 is the three-burner cart people actually own. Ignition is still usually two AAs and a collector box, with a ceramic at the left. Middle and right burners often walk the flame across a crossover — if the left lights and the others do not, you do not need three electrodes.
Spirit II E-310 (GS4) keeps the same logic with different burner shapes. Confirm the year on the rating plate before mixing an original Spirit electrode with a Spirit II kit.
What you should see
- Lid open, knobs off: a blue snap at the left electrode.
- Left knob to start, click, left tube lights.
- Open middle, then right; flame should carry within a second.
- If you have to click for each burner, the crossover is missing, rusted, or not clipped.
No-click versus no-spark
- No click. Batteries, then module. Battery well is almost always under the left side table. Two AAs, polarity stamped. Corroded springs: dry brush, not oil.
- Click, no snap. Lead off the collector, cracked ceramic, or a flooded box after a hose-down.
- Spark, no gas. Regulator reset and orifice seating.
Replace the electrode
- Tank off. Remove the three cooking grates (not E-210 width). Remove the three flavorizer bars.
- Photograph the gap and the wire path through the firebox hole.
- Pull the spade from the collector. Picture which post the left electrode used if multiple posts exist.
- Unclip or unscrew the bracket. Lift the ceramic. Vacuum shards.
- Install the new electrode. Aim at the factory tab or nearest port. Gap about a nickel. The E-310 burner is longer; the electrode still only sparks one place.
- Seat the crossover so it bridges all three burners. Rusted through → search Amazon or BBQGuys for Spirit E-310 crossover. Do not invent a part number.
- Fresh AAs. Tank on. Lid open. Snap test, then left-knob start, then walk the other knobs open.
Side burner (SX-315)
- Own electrode and a short lead to the same collector.
- Main box lights, side does not → swap that one lead and electrode.
- Neither lights → module or box is common.
Spirit II notes
- GS4 burners have a different crossover geometry. Do not force an older crossover onto GS4 tubes.
- The igniter button may be integrated differently on some II panels.
When to stop buying igniter parts
- Firebox rusted through at the electrode hole → new ceramic sits in rust. Box / new grill.
- Module + box + two electrodes and the cook box is otherwise fine → one more lead is reasonable.
- Missing a flavorizer set and a burner too → add it up.
