A Traeger lights pellets in a firepot with a cartridge heater — the hot rod. This is line-voltage (or high-current low-voltage) work. Unplug before you open the hopper or the pot.

Symptoms that are the rod
- Auger turns, fan runs, pellets land in the pot, nothing ignites after a full start cycle.
- Faint electrical heat — or nothing at all.
- Unplugged, cool rod: multimeter shows open (infinite) or short (near zero) instead of a finite heater resistance.
Symptoms that are not the rod
- Hopper empty or bridged.
- Pot is a cake of ash (ash insulation around a good rod fails ignition all summer).
- Vacuum path clogged.
- RTD probe wildly wrong.
- Controller never powers the rod (fuse or failed board).
Clean the pot and confirm pellets drop before you buy a heater.
Safety
- Unplug. Let the pot cool. Pellets and ash stay hot longer than you think.
- Do not vacuum live embers into a household vac — metal ash vac or a dead-cold pot only.
- Many models have 120 V leads. Brittle insulation → replace the leads with the rod, do not tape them.
- If you are not comfortable with a multimeter and unplugged discipline, this is a technician job.
Access the rod
The rod usually enters the firepot through a hole in the side or rear, held by a screw or clip, two wires toward the controller.
- Unplug. You can often work the pot without dumping 20 lb of pellets. If you must pull the auger housing, photograph every screw.
- Remove the grate, drip tray, and heat baffle. Vacuum cold ash.
- Photograph the rod, the screw, and the wire path. Note how far the rod protrudes. Too short misses the pile; too long fouls the auger.
- Disconnect the two wires at the connector — not by slicing the harness. Cooked connector: cut back to clean insulation and use high-temp connectors.
- Release the fastener and slide the rod out. It may be fused with ash. Do not lever the pot so hard you crack a weld.
Test the old rod
- Cool rod, resistance across the two leads.
- Healthy: finite, stable resistance (often tens of ohms — model-specific).
- Infinite: open, scrap. Near zero: short, scrap.
- Blistered or split sheath: scrap even if it still reads a number.
Install the new rod
- Confirm length against the old sheath and the diagram. Do not assume Pro 780 uses the 575 rod. Ironwood and Timberline: same rule.
- Slide to the same depth. Fasten. Do not crush the sheath in the clamp.
- Connect the two leads. Polarity on a simple heater is usually irrelevant; connection quality is not. Tug-test.
- Route wires off the pot and off the auger.
- Reassemble baffle, tray, grate. Plug in. Run a start cycle. A healthy rod glows after a minute. If it does not, unplug and recheck connections.
- Glows but pellets will not catch → fuel or air: wet pellets, starving auger, jammed fan. The rod did its job.
Shopping
- Search Amazon or BBQGuys for Traeger hot rod plus Pro 575 (or your model).
- Compare sheath length in the photos to the rod in your hand. We do not invent a part number.
- A “universal pellet igniter” of the wrong length will miss the pile or hit the auger.
When the rod is not worth it
- Firepot rusted through, auger tube holed, or controller board burned → add those prices.
- Good barrel + dead rod = replace the rod.
- Lace pot + failed controller = repair versus replace. Pellet grills have a higher AOV — browsing a replacement on BBQGuys can be the rational move.
