Porcelain enamel on a grate is a thin glass layer fired onto cast iron or steel. It is why the grate does not rust on week two. It is also why a steel wire wheel, a self-clean oven, or a dropped grate on concrete ends the part. Cleaning is about removing carbon without opening that glass.

How you know it is porcelain

Heat-cycle method after every cook

  1. Leave the burners on high 10–15 minutes after the food comes off, lid closed. More than 20 minutes on a thin porcelain grate warps rods and cooks the enamel over the flame guards.
  2. Shut the gas. Open the lid. Wait until the grate is hot but not glowing. A steam puff when you mist water is too hot.
  3. Scrape with nylon or a wooden paddle, with the grain of the rods. Do not jab the joints. A steel wheel takes enamel off in strips.
  4. Brush with a bristle-free tool or a soft brass brush. See bristle-free versus wire.
  5. Wipe with a barely oiled towel once the grate is warm. A teaspoon of high-smoke oil on a towel is a wipe, not a pour.

That is maintenance, not restoration.

Soak method when rods are black and sticky

  1. Confirm the grill is cold and the tank is shut. Lift the grates. Photograph how they sit — left and right pieces are not always identical.
  2. Use a plastic tub, not your bathtub. Lay a towel in the bottom so the grate does not chip.
  3. Soak in hot water and a squirt of dish soap 20–40 minutes. Do not add oven cleaner — alkali undercuts chips and dulls the gloss.
  4. Sprinkle baking soda on remaining islands and work them with a nylon pad. Rinse thoroughly. Residual alkali in a hollow rod end keeps etching.
  5. Inspect under raking light. White specks or rust dots are chips. Those spots get a dry wipe and a light oil. They do not get a wire wheel.
  6. Dry completely. Water left in hollow rods rusts from the inside. A 10-minute lid-open burn on low after reinstall is the drying step.
